ABOUT ME

I am a sociologist who studies gender theory and other topics related to gender and sexual orientation. My research began with a project that examined a popular sociological theory, doing gender, using a transgender lens. An article out of this work, Beards, Breasts, and Bodies: Doing Sex in a Gendered World, won the Distinguished Article in Sex and Gender award from the American Sociological Association. I have continued thinking about the meaning(s) and social construction of gender, including the influence of our social positions/roles. If you are interested, take a look at the two book chapters about mothering as a Guy Mom on the publications page. My most recent study examined the workplace experiences of masculine females. I've published two articles using that data--one on managing stigma in the workplace and another continuing my exploration of gender theory. My next project looks at access to health insurance for trans*-related surgery and how requirements reify or challenge the gender binary.

I have also studied racial/ethnic wage inequality among women in the United States. The U.S. has experienced significant growth in wage inequality over the past forty-five years. As we can see, the rich get richer and the well-being of the poor continues to decline. I have a couple of projects related to the growth in inequality on the back burner. See the publication page for articles regarding racial wage inequality among women.
